The main region of natural roofing slate in the US is an area in upper state New York and Vermont known as ‘Slate Valley’.
- There are a large number of quarries in this small area which is 24 miles long and 6 miles wide
- The slate quarries in this region were first uncovered by Welsh immigrants in the 18th century
- There are a large number of colours available in this area including green, black and mottled purple and red
